Joint Majors


Students choosing a joint major must have two faculty advisers, one from Religion and one from the other department or program. Students may also wish to take advantage of programs in the Departments of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies; African-American Studies; and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies in planning their course of study.

Joint Major in Religion and Anthropology Worksheet

A minimum of forty-four hours (fourteen courses) as follows:

  • Seventeen hours (five courses): One tradition-specific Religion course with approval of adviser; Religion 300; Religion 490W; Anthropology 202; and Anthropology 201 or 210.
  • Twenty-seven hours (nine courses) from the two departments: Four courses in Religion, two at the 300 level or above; five courses in Anthropology, not including 101. A minimum of a C average in the major is required.

Joint Major in Religion and Classical Civilization Worksheet

A minimum of forty-four to fifty-six hours (fourteen courses) as follows:

  • Either two 3 or 4 credit hour courses of Greek or Latin, or Classics 102 (4 hours) and 214 (3 hours)
  • Religion 300 (4 hours), Religion 490W (4 hours), and one tradition-specific course with approval of Religion adviser
  • An additional nine 3 or 4 credit hour courses in Religion and Classics, including
    • At least four 3 or 4 credit hour courses in Classics, or which at least two courses must be at the 200 level or higher
    • At least three 3 or 4 credit hour courses in Religion, of which at least two courses must be at the 300 level or higher.

Joint Major in Religion and History Worksheet

A minimum of forty-eight to fifty-six hours (fifteen courses) as follows:

  • Twenty-three hours (seven courses) from Religion: One tradition-specific course (with approval of adviser); Religion 300; Religion 490W; and four additional courses, two at the 300 level or higher.
  • Twenty-five hours (eight courses) from History: Eight courses, at least five of these at the 300 level or above, addressing subject matter common to the two disciplines, and one of which must be a 400-level colloquium (HIST 487, 488 or 489R).

The course list must be approved by an adviser in each department. Majors will write at least one term paper in their junior year and one in their senior year. One of these papers must be written in conjunction with a History course taken by the student, and one in conjunction with a Religion course. These papers will focus on the historical development of religion or religious ideas. Honors in the joint major may be earned by satisfying the honors requirements of either department.

Joint Major in Religion and Philosophy Worksheet

A minimum of forty-five hours (thirteen courses) as follows:

A. Religion Courses: 19-24 hours (six courses): One course from REL 301-320 (or other tradition-specific course with approval of adviser); Religion 300; Four religion electives with at least two at 200-level or above.

B. Philosophy Courses: 22-24 hours (six courses): Philosophy 110; Two of these three courses: Philosophy 200W, 202W, 204W; Three electives, with at least one at 300 level or above, and including either Philosophy 131 or Philosophy 431.

C.  Philosophy/Religion Senior Seminar (one course): Either Religion 490 (with paper in Philosophy), Philosophy 490 (with paper in Religion) or Phil/Rel 470 (joint seminar in philosophy and religion).

The course work should be organized, in consultation with an adviser, towards the study of a cluster of related subjects, or a specific theme, by the beginning of the senior year, in preparation for the senior (490 or 470) paper requirement. Honors in the joint major in philosophy and religion may be earned by satisfying the honors requirements of either department.

Joint Major in Religion and Sociology Worksheet

A minimum of forty-eight to fifty-six hours (fourteen courses) as follows:

  • Sixteen hours (five courses): One tradition-specific course in Religion (with approval of adviser); Religion 300; Sociology 201, 214, or 245; and Sociology 355 (or 355W); and QTM 100.
  • Twenty-six hours (eight courses) from the two departments: Three courses in Religion, two at the 300 level or higher; Religion 490W; Four courses in Sociology, including Sociology 333 or Sociology 221; Sociology 457W; and two Sociology courses at the 200 level or higher.
  • Six hours (two courses): Two courses from either or both of the departments, at least one at the 200 level or higher.

The course work of individual students should be organized in consultation with an adviser. Honors in the joint major may be earned by satisfying the honors requirements of either department.
