Eugene Bianchi (Professor Emeritus) (1968). With a B.A. & M.A. from Gonzaga University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University, Dr. Bianchi has taught at Emory since 1968. Among his books are Aging as a Spiritual Journey, 1982; A Democratic Catholic Church, 1992 (co-edited with Rosemary R. Ruether) and Elder Wisdom, 1994. He specializes in the spirituality of aging, Christian theology and institutional reform, as well as in transtraditional and ecological spirituality. He publishes, lectures and conducts workshops on these topics. He has recently concluded a major study of American Jesuits and former Jesuits.  A new book from this study, Passionate Uncertainty: Inside the American Jesuits, co-authored with Dr. Peter McDonough of Arizona State University, was published in 2002. He is the director of the Emeritus College program at Emory. In addition to his professional work, he has just published a novel, The Bishop of San Francisco.

Passionate Uncertainty "A fascinating look at Catholicism's most prestigious order in a time of change and of confusion. McDonough and Bianchi avoid a facile progressive triumphalism and deal quite forthrightly with the tensions and difficulties that both liberal and conservative agendas pose to the order: a highly interesting take on the future of the American church and its Jesuit elite."--Kirkus Reviews, starred review
